My first ever blog: Why I'm on here

I'll be honest I have never been a fan of blogs. I've never even been on to twitter before now.
What the heck am I doing on here then you may ask?
Well perhaps it is only now that I have something to say. A need to vent my spleen.
Let me explain.
I'm a thirty something journalist on a well-known and well-respected regional newspaper.
For reasons that shall become clear I'll leave it at that.
From an early age I wanted to be a journalist. I dreamed of getting the big scoop, investigating an issue, delving into people's lives.
And for the first few years it worked like that. I worked my way up the ladder on various newspapers, got some good stories and loved going into work pretty much every single day.
Slowly though that is starting to change and it is recent developments that have provoked me to sign up to twitter, to see if there is anyone else out there going through the same frustrations, or perhaps to try and explain to others what life is like in an industry that is often criticised.
Like many newspapers mine is feeling the squeeze. Falling sales and falling advertising revenue are starting to bite.
But still the company manages to make a profit - and a healthy one at that.
But lo and behold in recent times its decided it wants more profit, and in times like these that means only one thing - cost cutting.
Jobs are at risk, redundancies will be made and our newspaper is to be merged with our nearest rival - a move which I fear could be the death-knell for the title.
My reason then for starting this blog is I suppose to have an avenue to talk through this horrible process, explain it to others, if they find it of interest, and if they don't it may have at least helped make me feel better.
